Gaelyn Hurd grew up with modern and ballet dance training in Atlanta (Callanwolde Fine Arts Center), but by high school graduation, she was looking for something different. While her friends headed off to Tech, Emory and UGA, she prepared to attend the Maharishi University in Fairfield, Iowa. As part of their education, students eat organic vegetarian food from the dining hall, take one class at a time each month, and meditate in groups twice a day. There, under the direction of dancer and national level gymnast, Juliette Dailey, Gaelyn discovered improvisational movement which renewed her excitement for dance. Dailey teaches improv to people already committed to the practice of meditation, and uses that experience and discipline to bring out a singular focus and presence on stage. After graduation, Gaelyn joined Ms. Dailey’s company, Danza.Da and performed with them for one season, before the Iowa cold drove her home. Gaelyn joined Fly-By in 2007, and has performed in Test Flights:3 new short plays and On The Fly, our improv show.
