at 7 Stages This classic absurd comedy pits a painter, a wealthy gentleman and his one-armed sister in a constantly shifting emotional tug-of-war over a painting, raising questions about the relative value of art and its effect on our relationships. Ionesco is
widely recognized as one of the masters of the Theatre of the Absurd.
His plays are usually very humorous, making fun of mans absurd relationship
with language and then allowing the world to unravel itself; this play
is no different. All is fun and games until the Stout Gentleman pulls
out a gun and much to the audiences amazement, things only
get wilder. Ionescos inspiration for this play was the Marx Brothers
and the French cartoon Joseph Prudhomme. Fly-By Theatre uses this terrific
script as a jumping off point to their season long exploration of comedy.
This show in particular explores the visual and physical comic techniques
of comedians like the Marx Brothers. By combining their practices with
our own unique brand of physical theatre, Fly-By Theatre is creating a
comedy that is both nostalgic and relevant to todays audiences. Discount tickets are available for groups of 10 or more. Following every performance, Fly-By hosts an informal reception where audience and artists can mingle and talk. We encourage our audience to be a part of this conversation and voice their opinions to help guide Fly-By and the arts community in general into the future. |
